What counts as an ounce?
With grain, a slice of bread, a cup of cereal, or a 1/2 cup of rice, pasta, and cooked cereal is considered an ounce. Other common day foods can equivalent over and ounce of grain. For examples: a bagel is equivalent to 4 ounces, a microwave bag of popcorn is equivalent to 4 ounces, three pancakes are equivalent to 3 ounces, and a large tortilla is equivalent to 4 ounces.

Why is it important to eat grains, especially whole grains?
When people eat whole grains in their healthy diets it puts them at a lower risk of some chronic diseases. Also consuming foods rich in fiber may lower the risk of coronary heart disease and reduce constipation. If you eat 3 ounces of whole grains it can help you manage your weight.
Grains carry important sources of nutrients including dietary fibers,vitamin B, and minerals. Vitamin B helps the body release energy from protein which is very important. Foltate which is another B vitamin helps the body form red blood cells. The iron that is in grains helps the body carry oxygen in the blood. Finally grains have magnesium which helps build bones and release energy from muscles.

Tips to help you eat whole grains
At meals try and substitute the whole grain product with a refined product like wheat or brown bread. You can use whole grains in mixed dishes. You can try using an unsweetened whole grain cereal as croutons in salad or in place of crackers in soup.
For snacks try eating whole grain cereals, popcorn(with no added salt or pepper), or tortilla chips.
When shopping at the store look for whole grain foods with these as first ingredients: “brown rice”, "bulgar", "graham flour", "oatmeal", "whole-grain corn", "whole oats", "whole rye", "whole wheat", and "whole rice". Watch out for food with labels on them like, " 100% wheat", "multi grain", and "seven grain" because they are usually not whole grains.
With children set a good example and eat whole grain snacks with them. Let them pick out their own whole grain snack. If you have older children have them check the ingredients for whole grains.

I feel that you should take out the seeds when you are juicing, because the seeds contain cyanide. The best kind of apples for you to buy would have to be the organic apple's. This type of apple does not have the wax that they put on some types. Apple's also offer a lot of amino acids.

The kiwi is traditionally used for treating and preventing scurvy. It is a good source of vitamin C. It is fresh if is firm but can be squeezed slightly. Kiwi is exceptionally high in vitamin C and should be drank immediately after juicing to get the max vitamin C. Kiwi is high in vitamin c, e, and niacin.

10 Years After Quitting: The lung cancer death rate is about half that of a continuing smoker's. The risk of cancer of the mouth, throat, esophagus, bladder, cervix, and pancreas decreases. (US Surgeon General's Report, 1990, pp. vi, 131, 148, 152, 155, 164,166)

15 Years After Quitting: The risk of coronary heart disease is that of a nonsmoker's. (US Surgeon General's Report, 1990, p. vi)

Visible and immediate rewards of quiting

Quitting helps stop the damaging effects of tobacco on your appearance, including:

* premature wrinkling of the skin
* bad breath
* stained teeth
* gum disease
* bad smelling clothes and hair
* yellow fingernails

Getting rid of the tobacco habit offers benefits that you'll notice immediately and some that will develop gradually over time. These rewards can improve your day-to-day life.

* Food tastes better.
* Your sense of smell returns to normal.
* Ordinary activities no longer leave you out of breath.

Why quit

About half of all the people who continue to smoke will die because of the habit. In the United States, tobacco causes nearly 1 in 5 deaths, killing about 440,000 Americans each year. Smoking is the single most preventable cause of death in our society. Tobacco use accounts for about one third of all cancer deaths in the United States. Smoking causes almost 90% of lung cancers. Research has found that even smoking as few as 1 to 4 cigarettes a day can have serious health consequences, including an increased risk of heart disease and a higher risk of dying at an earlier age.

Contraceptive Report
10/16

Ricky talked about 5 differnt contraception divices. The first was a femal condom. It is easy to buy, good for people with latex allergies, protects people from many infections, includeing HIV. The second was a Male condom which is also easy to buy, can put a part in sex play, amd can help relieve early ejaculation. The third was the nova ring (nuvaring), Does not require fitting by a doctor, Does not require spermicide, no pill to take daily, and ability to get pregnant returns quickly after stoping. The fourth is the pill which stops ovalation, and the fith was the dental dam which is performed with the anus or the vagina in oral intercourse, it stops sti's (herpies). I believe everyone from the age 15 and up should be allowed to purchase contraceptives due to the uprising percentage of early teenage intercourse and we dont need any more teenage pregnantcies. When you want to discuss these topics of intercourse with you parents or partner then you just need to sit them and down and have a talk and tell them what you would like to do and then learn what they want.

Testicular cancer and Cervix Cancer

Testicular cancer is uncommon in men and only 1-2% of men are diagnosed with testicular cancer every year with unknown causes. Testicular cancer is harder to get as you get older and there has never been a case of testicular cancer from anyone 74 years or older. Most cases of testicular cancer are within the ages of 25-45. Testicular cancer is 100% detectable by all men including the ones who have it. Testicular cancer may be detected by lumps on the testicle, an enlarged testicle or pain in the testicles.

Cervix cancer is a common cancer for women which is also HPV and there are over 100 types of HPV. Women who obtain this cancer and are able to get treated for it normally recover with no health problems at all. To reduce the chances of a women actually getting HPV is having no sex, if you insist on having sex than have it with only one partner, sex with no intercourse, always have a condom or receive the HPV vaccine.

Vitamins

Martin
Thiamine, also called vitamin B1, is used in many different body functions. A very little amount of this vitamin is actually stored in the body. Thiamine is a very important vitamin, if somebody who is suffering from beriberi injects thiamine into there body, then they will be on their feet within a matter of hours. It also plays a role in helping circulation. It helps the blood formation and the metabolism of carbohydrates. It is also required for the health of the nervous system, and is used in the bio synthesis of a number of call constituents. Females should consume 1.0 mg per day, and males should consume 1.4 mg a day. Death in Thia min is very uncommon, although long-term amounts of larger than 3 grams have been known to cause toxicity. This vitamin should be taken with the B group vitamins and manganese. Rogers
Vitamin P, 9/11/07
Wendell Rogers
Vitamin P or bioflavonoids are compounds found in ample amounts within plants. They serve in the defense and pigmentation of plants. Unlike many active plant compounds flavonoids have a low toxicity. Flavonoids are known for their anti-oxidant properties. And although have been called Vitamin P for ease, are not really vitamins.
Flavonoids are helpful in the absorption of Vitamin C and are more potent when taken together. However flavonoids are absorbed poorly by the body, at only about 5% . Research has also shown that flavonoids are quickly metabolized by the body, as they are seen as foreign bodies. Therefore the newest belief is that the flavonoids do not act directly in the body, but that it is the bodies reaction against them that is beneficial, almost in the same way as a vaccination. Flavonoids can provide anti-allergic, anti-inflammatory, anti-microbial and anti-cancer services.
Flavonoids are found in most plants but the white membrane below citrus peel, as well as peppers, grapes, red wine, onions, garlic, blue and red berries, green tea and buckwheat are specifically high in them. There is little problem with deficiencies, interactions or overdoses with a decent diet, as flavonoids are common within our foods. In extreme causes an overdose of flavonoids can cause diarrhea.

Some people feel that you can juice with the seeds of an apple, and on the other hand some people also feel that you shouldn't juice your apple with the seeds. I feel that you should take out the seeds when you are juicing, because the seeds contain cyanide. The best kind of apples for you to buy would have to be the organic apple's. This type of apple does not have the wax that they put on some types. Apple's also offer a lot of amino acids.

Eating tomatoes has many health benifits. They contain compounds that have been proven to help prevent cancer, heart disease, cataracts and much more. Tomatoes were never eaten in the U.S. until the early 1800's because they are considered part of the deadly nightshade family. The deadly nightshade family were considered toxic and caused many things like appendicitis, cancer and "brain fever". But now people know that they are safe to eat and may do just the opposite. They contain a large amount of vitamin C (40% of the daily value), 15% of daily value for vitamin A, 8% of potassuim, 7% of the recommended dietary allowance (RDA) of iron for women and 10% RDA for men. The compound I talked about in the beggining appears to act as an antioxidant which neutralizing free radicals that may damage cells in the body. Harvard's studies have discovered that men who consume 10 servings of tomatoes a week (which is the equivalent to 10 slices of pizza) can reduce the risk of developing prostate cancer by 45%. Today, I came to class and we came to the computer lab. We had to sign up on our schools wiki by typing in our username and password, which was our name again. Then we had to change our password to our own preference. After we signed in again to make sure our new password worked, we had to go to our class blog and reread the syllabus. After we were set on our class blog we went to blogspot.com and made our own blog. Our username was our email address and then our own password. After I finished my blog I had to add 5 more branches for my blog for my class. After the branches were done i added a video wendy made off of youtube.com.

Today in class
Today in class we talked about the five different types of health,physical, spiritual, mental, emotional and social... All without my notes :) . Then as when class was getting good we had a fire drill which resulted in us going outside and then coming back in. When we came back in we went right back outside for almost like a study or lab. When we got out there we were told to get to a green post in 20 seconds. When everyone was at the post, we talked about what of the 5 healths we used then we wrote them down in our notebook and described what we did. After that we went to different spots and described each spot the same way we described the running to the post, and what different aspects they were to the 5 kinds of health. When we went back inside a box had gotten out way and we had to move it. Then after that we talked about juicing a little more and then the bell rang.

JUICING
What is juicing and why would you want to have juicing be part of a health lifestyle?
Some people believe that juicing is by far the best way to lose weight because it gives you all the nutrients and vitamins that you would need in a normal diet but with less calorie loss. Most protein from juicing comes from the vegetables celery, spinach, asparagus, string beans and cauliflower. When you juice vegetables you get all the nutrients and benefits.

9/10/07

When we first got into class we took a survey on our habits in life like drinking, smoking, exercise, stress and a couple other things. Then Mr. Cahoon asked people around the room about what we scored on each subject. After we got all that done we finished watching the movie on juicing and how we should prepair certain fruits and vegetables before actually juicing them. Then we watched two more clips about certain juicers, one was the Breville Juice Fountain Elite which is the juicer we ordered and the other was on The Jack Lalanne Power Juicer.

9/12/07

When we got to class we talked about how grades come out next Friday and if you don’t have all your work on you blog then you wont be able to play sports for awhile. Then we checked other peoples blog to see how much they had done. After that we talked about other assignments that we had to do including creating a account at del.ici.ous.com. Then we went to flikr.com to see how to get an account there. Then we went to a food pyramid site which is where we will do our group project and I will be working with Molly.

9/14/07

We checked peoples blog's to see what people had done and we learned not to put offensive pictures on our blog. We went over the food pyramid assignment and what had to be done. Then we put a couple of peoples information into http://www.mypyramid.gov to see how many calories and what kinds of food they should eat to stay at the weight that they are in.
